Prof. Galit Almoznino

Principal Investigator

Prof. Almoznino is an Oral Medicine specialist and an Epidemiologist. Prof. Almoznino is a Senior Lecturer of Oral Medicine at the Hebrew University. She serves as the Head, Big Biomedical Data Research Laboratory, and as the Head of the Orofacial Sensory Clinic as well as the Taste and Smell Clinic, Department of Oral Medicine Sedation & Maxillofacial Imaging, Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel. She is the immediate past President of the Israel Society of Oral Medicine (ISOM) (2017-2018) and a member of the Hadassah Medical Center Institutional Review Board. Prof. Almoznino is a member of the Board of examiners in Oral Medicine Specialty in Israel. She is a member of the Hebrew University Center for Research on Pain, a roof organization uniting several research laboratories and clinics of the Hebrew University.
Prof. Almoznino is involved in Big Biomedical Data Research at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the Hebrew University/Hadassah. She received several grants to work with large digital datasets, in the fields of autoimmune conditions (mobile health project) as well as analyzing oral morbidity and associations with systemic morbidity (EMR based project). Prof. Almoznino established the first large scale EMR -based study in dentistry in Israel entitled:" The Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemiological (DOME) study". This project is aimed to analyze dental morbidity and associations with systemic morbidity. Prof. Almoznino is a graduate of the Hebrew University/Hadassah, where she graduated a D.M.D (Doctorate in Dental Medicine) degree in 1996.
Prof. Almoznino also completed a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree at the Hebrew University/Hadassah (Oral microbiology, thesis supervisor: Prof. Doron Steinberg, the head, Biofilm Research Laboratory).
She completed Summa cum laude an M.H.A (Master of Health Administration) degree at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. In 2007, she completed a recognized specialty training in Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain at the Hebrew University/Hadassah and was certified as an Oral Medicine Specialist. Prof. Almoznino also completed Summa cum Claude an MPH degree (Epidemiology and biostatistics stream).
From 2007-2015, Prof. Almoznino served as the Head of the Department of Oral Medicine, at Tel-Hashomer, Israel, a multi-disciplinary Oral Medicine Department, which serves as a secondary referral center for Oral Medicine, receiving referrals from local general medical and dental practitioners throughout the country.

Dr. Adiel Cohen

​Dr. Adiel Cohen is a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Hadassah Medical Center and is currently a Phd student. His thesis is focused on Examining the associations between dental and oral health with fertility and obstetrics outcomes. ​ Adiel is analyzing data from the Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemiological (DOME) database.

Dr. Itay Aizenbud

Itay started his academic journey in 2014 by successfully enrolling to the Faculty of Dental Medicine, The Hebrew University and Hadassah, Jerusalem, Israel.  He achieved his B. Med. Sc. Degree in 2018. From there he continued his studies in the combined track of Dentistry and Master of Science degrees at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, The Hebrew University and Hadassah, Jerusalem, Israel.  The research thesis is carried out under the supervision of Prof. Avi- Hai Hovav from the Institute of dental research and Prof. Rakefet Cezrnenski from the Oral Medicine Department. Research Project title was:  The role of Langerhans cells in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. In 2019, he was chosen to be chairman in Immunology and Oral biology in the IADR general session, Vancouver, BC, Canada. He received his M.Sc. degree in 2020 and graduated as one of the top in his class in 2022 accomplishing his D.M.D. degree.

Itay now serve as an army dentist in the IDF, commanding on a dental clinic in one of the IDF bases’. By that contributing back to the society and to his country.

Itay continues his academic career in the Prof. Almoznino Lab by doing his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Galit Almoznino and Prof. Asaf Willensky in the field of big data. He researches the relation between Periodontal disease to other factors such as socio-demographic factors, health conditions, Metabolic syndrome and other dental pathologies such as carries.

Nitzan Aizenbud

Nitzan has recently graduated with a B. Med Sc. degree (2021). Simultaneously she started her studies in the combined track of Dentistry and Master of Science degrees at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, The Hebrew University and Hadassah, Jerusalem, Israel. The research thesis is carried out under the supervision of Prof. Doron Aframian and Prof. Galit Almoznino from the Oral Medicine Department.

The research project title is Salivary cytokines characterization of Sjörgen Syndrom patients following intraductal irrigation of salivary glands.

Shmuel Shay Shiloh

Shmuel Shay Shiloh has recently graduated with a B.Med.Sc degree (2021) and is a DMD-MSc. Student at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His current study is using big data technology to analyze and predict rheumatic diseases. Before his study, Shmuel served for 6 years in an elite intelligence forces unit as data and big data developer and team leader.

Rawi Saad

Rawi Saad is a DMD-MSc. Student at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. 

The research thesis is carried out under the supervision of Prof. Prof. Tal Burstyn-Cohen and Prof. Galit Almoznino.

His Thesis is focused on Analysis of inflammatory markers in oral fluids of Rheumatic Arthritis patients.

Amina Massarwa

Dr. Amina Massarwa is a resident at the Department of Oral Medicine, Sedation and Maxillofacial imaging, Hebrew University of Jerusalem-Hadassah School of Dental medicine and currently is a MSc student at the same institute. Her study is focused on the "Assessment of prophylactic treatment to prevent salivary gland damage in thyroid cancer patients receiving radioactive iodine therapy" under the supervision of Prof. Doron Aframian and Prof. Galit almoznino.
